Asscher cut was invented in 1902 by Joseph Asscher of the Royal Asscher diamond company in Amsterdam, who was also responsible for polishing the famous Cullinan diamond. The polishing – an improved square shape with cut corners and 58 facets – reflected the geometrical lines and Art Deco style.

The Asscher cut, which was the first patented form of polishing, and Royal held the rights to this polishing for four decades. When the patent expired during World War II, other diamond companies began to use it but did not always stick to the specific details that characterized Joseph Asscher’s polishing work.

Since this is a square polishing – although the cut corners of the diamond are diamond-like contours that are reminiscent of an octagon – the ideal proportions of the length of a diamond for polishing diamonds that are 1: 1.
